A 400-volt battery under the floor, diagnostics done more with a laptop than a wrench: electric vehicles are changing daily life in repair shops. For technicians who specialize in them, one question comes up fast at negotiation time: what is that expertise worth in 2026?

No official "EV salary"

First, no official statistic isolates EV-specialized technicians. In Canada, they are grouped with all motor vehicle, truck and bus mechanics (NOC 72410). Be wary of any figure presented as "the EV salary in Canada."

For this group, Job Bank lists the following hourly rates, based on 2023–2024 data updated on November 19, 2025:

Region Low Median High
Canada $19.00 $29.89 $43.27
Quebec $20.00 $28.00 $40.00
Ontario $18.75 $30.00 $43.27
Alberta $19.84 $30.00 $47.00
British Columbia $20.00 $35.00 $49.00

The top of the range does not automatically mean an EV specialist: it mostly reflects experience and region.

In Quebec: Canada Motor Jobs benchmarks

Canada Motor Jobs' 2025 salary estimates, based on collective agreements and its platform statistics, give finer benchmarks for journeyperson mechanics, regardless of powertrain:

Region 3 to 5 years 6 years or more
Greater Montreal area $83,000–$86,000 $89,000–$91,000
Greater Quebec City area $78,020–$80,840 $83,660–$85,540
Laurentides–Lanaudière $78,020–$80,840 $83,660–$85,540
Gatineau / Outaouais $76,360–$79,120 $81,880–$83,720
Sherbrooke / Estrie $73,870–$76,540 $79,210–$80,990
Drummondville / Centre-du-Québec $73,040–$75,680 $78,320–$80,080
Trois-Rivières / Mauricie $72,210–$74,820 $77,430–$79,170
Victoriaville / Bois-Francs $70,550–$73,100 $75,650–$77,350

In Montreal, the six-years-plus range works out to about $42.79 to $43.75 an hour. For a Montreal apprentice with one to two years of experience, estimates drop to $50,000–$54,000. EV specialization is negotiated on top of status and experience, not instead of them.

What employers are looking for

On Canada Motor Jobs, listings that mention electric or hybrid work are growing, such as this automotive technician – EV and diagnostics expert role in Mississauga or this automotive hybrid technician job in Hamilton. All mechanic and technician listings make it easy to compare what is on offer.

These skills are already part of the trade. The 2023 Red Seal Occupational Standard includes diagnosing hybrid and electric vehicles and servicing high-voltage batteries. So it is better to arrive at an interview with diagnostics you have performed and courses you have completed than with a "specialist" title alone.

Negotiate more than the rate

Before signing, ask the real questions. Will EV training be paid? Will time spent on complex diagnostics be recognized in the pay structure? What protective equipment and insulated tools are provided? And above all: when will new skills trigger a pay review?

A written offer that separates base rate, bonuses and progression is worth more than a vague promise of an "EV premium."

FAQ

Does EV training guarantee a raise?

No, no data shows a universal premium. Have the progression written into your contract.

How much should you ask for in Montreal with six years of experience?

For a journeyperson mechanic, Canada Motor Jobs gives a 2025 benchmark of $89,000–$91,000 a year, to be adjusted for the EV responsibilities of the role.

Does the Red Seal set pay?

No. It recognizes skills across Canada, but it is not a pay scale.

Electric vehicles do not replace the mechanic's trade: they expand it. Technicians who can prove it, with concrete evidence, hold strong cards at the bargaining table.
