Finding a technician for a repair shop and recruiting a sales manager call for different approaches. Automotive recruiters need to understand the roles, clarify employers’ needs and support candidates. Canada Motor Jobs takes a closer look at this human resources specialization, how to enter the field and salary benchmarks in Canada.
A human resources profession—not just a matter of connections
Recruiting is more than posting a job ad and waiting for résumés to arrive. In the 2021 version of the National Occupational Classification, unit group 12101 includes human resources and recruitment officers. Their duties include defining vacancies, reviewing applications, coordinating interviews and communicating results.
Consider a practical example: a manager is looking for “a good mechanic.” Before starting the search, the recruiter needs to turn that request into specific criteria. What repairs will the person handle? What support will be available? What working conditions can the employer realistically offer? A well-prepared search starts with answers to these questions.
Before accepting a recruiter position, it is also important to clarify the mandate: will you serve one company, several locations within a group or an agency’s clients? Ask who approves hires, how many files you will manage and how much of the role involves administrative work.
Understanding the automotive industry helps assess candidates
Industry knowledge helps recruiters ask better questions. The occupational description published by the Red Seal Program covers diagnostics, electrical and electronic systems, hybrid and electric vehicles, and advanced driver-assistance systems. Automotive service work therefore goes beyond routine maintenance.
When preparing for an interview, it is better to start with the actual job duties than with a list of keywords. Asking a candidate to describe a challenging diagnosis, explain their approach and identify the tools they used can help structure the conversation. An in-depth technical assessment should then be arranged with someone qualified in the trade.
The same approach applies to other roles. For a service advisor position, prepare scenarios about how the candidate explains information to customers. For sales roles, explore how they follow up on files. Recruiters are better off developing questions with the hiring manager than reusing the same interview guide for every position.
Which education and skills should you prioritize?
According to the 2021 NOC, a college diploma in a field related to personnel management, or a relevant professional development program, is usually required. Administrative experience may also be requested. In Quebec, the Government of Quebec highlights programs in human resources management support, administration and industrial relations.
Beyond education, Quebec’s profile highlights active listening, written and oral communication, judgment, coordination and time management. This profile challenges the idea that the job is suited only to highly extroverted people: analytical and organizational skills matter too.
If you are considering a move from the automotive industry, take stock of your transferable skills: knowledge of automotive roles, meeting facilitation, writing and administrative follow-up. Then address any gaps in interviewing techniques and candidate management. Industry experience can inform your approach, but it should not replace a rigorous selection process.
Salary: interpreting the benchmarks carefully
For comparison, we use official data from Job Bank. Updated on November 19, 2025, the figures for Canada and Quebec are based on Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey for 2023–2024. They cover the entire occupational group 12101, across all industries.
| Region | Low hourly wage | Median hourly wage | High hourly wage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada | $22.00 | $33.33 | $52.73 |
| Quebec | $24.80 | $31.25 | $52.88 |
These figures are not a salary scale specifically for automotive recruiters, and the “low” and “high” levels do not automatically correspond to experience levels. The cited salary profiles do not break out this specialization.
Before comparing two offers, ask for a written breakdown of compensation: base salary, any bonus, eligibility criteria, benefits and schedule. Also consider the resources available to meet the objectives. A stated salary does not, on its own, describe the working conditions.
Outlook varies depending on the timeframe
It would be misleading to infer from repair shops’ hiring needs that recruiters are automatically in short supply. For 2025–2027, Job Bank rates prospects for occupational group 12101 as very limited in Quebec and Ontario, but moderate in the Atlantic provinces and Saskatchewan. These assessments do not distinguish the automotive industry.
The assessments do not fully align. The Government of Quebec’s profile instead indicates good prospects for 2025–2029. The periods differ, so it is important to name the source and timeframe rather than present a single rating as a certainty.
For someone considering this profession, the more useful question is: which employers in the region they are targeting want to build their recruiting capacity? To prepare, research the HR teams at prospective employers and learn about their needs, without mistaking their clients’ hiring challenges for openings in recruitment.
Trust is an everyday responsibility
A recruiter represents the employer while also respecting candidates’ rights. In Quebec, the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse notes that questions about prohibited grounds of discrimination, including age and marital status, are generally not permitted during hiring. The conversation should stay focused on requirements relevant to the job.
Confidentiality calls for another set of safeguards. According to the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec, employers should collect only the information needed at each stage of recruitment. A candidate’s consent does not make unnecessary collection legitimate.
To put these principles into practice, prepare your questions, limit your notes to job-related criteria and explain the next steps clearly. Also avoid making promises the hiring manager has not confirmed. Recruitment quality should be assessed as much by the clarity of the process as by its speed.
